First, Second and Third Year Prizes
Rosemary Merlo Prize in First Year History
- Awarded for the best first year essay in any first year subject
- Prizewinner must be under 21 years of age
- Subject coordinators will be asked to make nominations
- The undergraduate administrator will also check records for high marks in first year history essays by students under 21 years of age and draw them to the attention of subject coordinators if they have not already nominated the essay
- A reader is appointed by the APC coordinator to judge the Prize.
The Age of Revolutions 1750-1800 Exhibition
- Awarded to the student with the best overall mark in the subjects, The Age of Revolutions A: American Revolution or The Age of Revolutions B: French Revolution, regardless of whether they have completed one or both units
- The subject coordinator will award the Prize.
Rosemary Merlo Prize in Second Year History
- Awarded to the student with the best second year essay in any second/third year subject
- The Prizewinner must be enrolled as a second year student
- The Prizewinner must be under 21 years of age
- Subject coordinators will be asked to make nominations
- The undergraduate administrator will also check records for the highest marks in second year history by students under 21 years of age and enrolled in second year, and draw them to the attention of subject coordinators if they have not already nominated the essay.
- An examiner will be appointed by the APC coordinator to judge the Prize.
Marion Boothby Prize in British History
- Awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in any first and second/third year British History subject (including subjects in British, Irish, Scottish or Welsh History)
- The undergraduate administrator will check records for the highest marks in British, Irish, and Scottish History subjects, and report to the APC coordinator who will award the prize to the student with the highest overall mark.
D.F Mackay Prize for Modern British History (2nd year)
- Awarded to the student with the highest overall mark in second/third year British History (including subjects in British, Irish, Scottish or Welsh History)
- The Prizewinner must be enrolled as a second year student
- The undergraduate administrator will check records for the highest marks in British, Irish, and Scottish History subjects, and report to the APC coordinator who will award the prize to the student with the highest overall mark.
D.F Mackay Prize for Second Year History
- Awarded to the second year student who achieves the highest overall mark
- The Prizewinner must be enrolled as a second year student
- If near equal results are recorded, preference will be given to the student enrolled in more second year History subjects.
- The undergraduate administrator will check records for the highest achieving second year students in second/third year subjects and advise the APC coordinator who will award the Prize.
Henry Gyles Turner Prize in Australian History
- Awarded to the student with the best essay in any first and second/third year Australian History subject.
- The Prizewinner must not have been enrolled as a student at the University of Melbourne for more than three years
- Subject coordinators will be asked to make nominations
- The undergraduate administrator will also check records for high marks in Australian History subjects, and draw them to the attention of subject coordinators if they have not already nominated the essay.
- An examiner will be appointed by the APC coordinator to judge the Prize.
Felix Raab Prize in Early Modern European History
- Awarded to the student with the best essay in any first and second/third year Early Modern European History subject
- The Prizewinner must not have been previously enrolled in the subject for which their work is nominated
- Subject coordinators will be asked to make nominations
- The undergraduate administrator will also check records for high marks in Early Modern European History subject, and draw them to the attention of subject coordinators if they have not already nominated the essay
- An examiner will be appointed by the APC coordinator to judge the Prize
- A proportion of the Prize must be in the form of books. Books purchased by the Prizewinner must be returned to the Department to have book-plates commemorating Felix Raab attached - student can then be presented with the book at a prize-giving event.
Laurie R Gardiner Prize in Early Modern British History
- Awarded to the student with the best essay in any first or second/third year Early Modern British History Subject
- The subject coordinator will nominate essays and award the Prize.
Jessie Mary Vasey Prize in Women’s History (3rd Year)
- Awarded to the student with the best essay in the area of Women’s History
- The Prizewinner must be enrolled as a third year student
- There will be a general call for nominations – as the winner could come from any subject in the Department, teachers need to be particularly reminded of this prize.
- An examiner will be appointed by the APC coordinator to judge the Prize.
R.G Wilson Scholarship for Third Year History
- Awarded to the student with the best overall mark in third year history
- The Prizewinner must be enrolled as a third year student
- If results are near equal, preference will be given to the student enrolled in more history subjects
- The undergraduate administrator will check records for high achieving third year students enrolled in third year subjects
- The APC coordinator will award the Prize.
Juliet Flesch Cambridge History Prize
- Awarded to any first or second/third year student with the best essay, not exceeding 3000 words, using the Cambridge in Books material located in the Baillieu Library.
- The Prize shall not be award if no entry is deemed to be of a satisfactory standard.
Mary O'Donoghue Prize in Irish History
- Awarded to the student with the best essay, not exceeding 3000 words in any first or second/third year Irish History subject
- There will be a general call for nominations
- An examiner will be appointed by the APC coordinator to judge the Prize
- The Prize shall not be awarded if no entry is deemed to be of a satisfactory standard.
Australians Studying Abroad History Prize
- The prize is to be awarded each year to a student enrolled in a second or third year level History subject who submits the best piece of work that makes substantial use of visual, aural or multimedia material.
- The prize winner must be enrolled in a second or third year History subject at the University of Melbourne.
- A reader will be appointed by the APC coordinator to judge the Prize.
The Extension Program Prize
- Awarded to the Year 12 student who receives the highest mark in the History extension subject.
Honours Prizes
Jessie Webb Scholarship in Combined Latin and History or in Combined Greek and History
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in combined Latin and History or in combined Greek and History
- There will be a general call for nominations
- An examiner will be appointed by the Honours coordinator to award to the Prize.
Brian Fitzpatrick Prize for Thesis in Australian History
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in Australian History
- There will be a general call for nominations
- An examiner will be appointed by the Honours coordinator to award to the Prize.
Jessie Mary Vasey Prize for Thesis in Women’s History
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in Women’s History
- There will be a general call for nominations
- An examiner will be appointed by the Honours coordinator to award to the Prize.
Margaret Kiddle Prize for Thesis in Pure or Combined History
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in pure or combined History
- The Prizewinner must not already hold a University degree or diploma.
William Culican Memorial Award for Thesis in Archeology or Ancient History
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in the areas of Archeology or Ancient History
- The Honours coordinator will advise the Department of Classical Studies and Archaeology of the top thesis in this area.
Dwight Final Examination Prize
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in combined Honours
- The Prizewinner must not have previously been enrolled in a combined Honours course.
Kathleen Fitzpatrick Exhibition for Thesis in Combined English and History
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in combined English and History.
Professor A.R Chisolm Memorial Prize
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis in French Studies
- Open to students in combined French and History
- The Prize will be awarded by the Department of French and Italian Studies.
External Prizes
The RSL Viller Bretonneux Essay Prize
- Awarded to the student with the best thesis, up to 12,000 words in Australian Military History
- Examiners for the Prize will be appointed annually on the recommendation of the Arts Faculty and will comprise three examiners of whom one shall be the subject coordinator of ‘Australians at War’ if available
- Once a decision has been made, the University of Melbourne will advise the RSL President who will then arrange payment to the Prizewinner.
Royal Historical Society of Victoria Australian History Prize
- Awarded to the student with the best Honours thesis in Australian History
- The examiner of the prize shall be the staff member in charge of the subject ‘Australian History’, with power to co-opt.
- The Prize will be presented by the RHSV at a meeting of the society early in the year following notification of the winner.
