Tunisia in the Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries

The pages that are linked here are part of a much wider project on early modern Tunisia. Only a small part of the images are here at the moment, and the text is nowhere near complete.

So far two sections are up. The first is on Bizerte, the great corsairing port to the north of Tunis. The second is a small number of images of the madina of Tunis. Eventually this section on Tunis will cover all areas of the madina, with a description of its evolution in each century and how that related to political developments. For the moment three buildings from southern part of the madina are included - the Turbat al-Bey the Dar Uthman and the Dar ben Abdallah and three from the central madina, the Zitouna mosque, the Médersa Es Slimaniya and the Zaouia Ben Arous

The various parts of the site are linked to index maps, with the links in blue and green.
