Cultural Heritage
The Unit’s focus is the exciting synergy between history and cultural heritage. Cultural heritage — ranging from family quilts and photograph albums to archaeological sites, streetscapes, and historic landscapes — encapsulates the accumulating experiences and evolving identities of social groups, communities, and nation states. Cultural heritage is thus conditioned by the past but speaks to the present. However it requires translators. History offers a key with which to unlock the hidden meanings of the traces from the past which surround and enthral us. The Cultural Heritage Unit delivers the highest-quality historical research in order to help interpret, publicise, and protect these cultural heritage survivals. The Unit combines academic excellence with practicality and accessibility: its mission is to assist appreciation of history and heritage in the general community. The Unit undertakes commissioned research and collaborates with government heritage agencies, local government, community groups, and cultural tourism providers. It maintains close strategic alliances with heritage agencies throughout Victoria and interstate. |
