City History

The city provides historians with a laboratory for exploring the historical relationships between individual people, spaces and places and social institutions. Through its teaching and research programs, the Unit combines innovative local studies with broader comparative contexts across national and transnational networks. Melbourne is a significant city in the context of international urban growth, privileged as the setting and focus of urban research by the city’s historical position as regional and national focus and as one of the world’s pre-eminent 19th century metropolises. ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ indeed symbolised the achievements of Australian urbanisation and suburbanisation.
