Robert Austin holds a PhD in History and Latin American Studies (La Trobe). He has some eighty publications in the field. His recent books include The State, Literacy & Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 (reviewed here); (Ed.), Diálogos sobre Estado y Educación Popular en Chile: de Frei a Frei (1964-1993) (reviewed here); (Ed.), Intelectuales y Educación Superior en Chile: de la Independencia a la Democracia Transicional, 1810-2001 (reviewed here) and (Ed.), Imperialismo Cultural en América Latina: Historiografía y Praxis (reviewed here).

His forthcoming books include Perverse Pedagogy: The School of the Americas & the Rise of Terrorist States, and Reconstructing the National Unified School: Myth & History (1927-1973), a history of Salvador Allende's unique cultural project co-written with emeritus professor Lautaro Videla, one of its two architects.

Since 1990 Dr Austin has worked in Humanities and Social Science faculties in Latin American and Australian universities. He has been a professor at two Chilean universities; and visiting professor at the Universidad de Matanzas, Cuba. He is a participating editor of the journals Cronos (Brazil) and Latin American Perspectives (USA); and has worked with Encuentro XXI (Chile).
